Dropping Rhine water levels have exposed WWII munitions in Koblenz while historic groundwater lows force Hesse municipalities to restrict park irrigation.

Receding water levels along the Rhine River have revealed historical hazards and highlighted broader environmental strains in western Germany. In Koblenz, low river conditions led to the discovery of an unexploded World War II Bazooka rocket along the shoreline, though local authorities confirmed the munition posed no immediate danger to the public.

Simultaneously, regional environmental data from Hesse shows that groundwater reserves across several areas have dropped to historic lows. While state officials noted that the current situation does not constitute an emergency, drought conditions have prompted local municipalities to alter public services. In cities such as Kassel, authorities have limited the irrigation of municipal parks and green spaces, citing both staffing constraints and ecological concerns over excessive water usage.
