Protesters block contentious Orange Order march in Portadown
A restricted Orange Order parade in Portadown was halted by police after counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road.
A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown was blocked on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters gathered along Garvaghy Road. An overnight High Court ruling had permitted a restricted silent march by 35 members along the predominantly nationalist route for the first time in nearly three decades.
However, the procession failed to proceed within its approved timeframe after police halted the parade near Drumcree Church to prevent potential disorder. Demonstrators, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, remained on the road as authorities and community representatives engaged in discussions to de-escalate the standoff.
