A contentious Orange Order march in Portadown was halted by thousands of counter-protesters despite a late-night Belfast High Court ruling.

Tensions remain elevated in Portadown after thousands of counter-protesters blocked a contentious Orange Order parade from passing along Garvaghy Road.

Following an unprecedented late-night Belfast High Court ruling upholding a decision by the Parades Commission, 35 members of the Protestant organization were permitted to conduct a brief, silent march—the first sanctioned procession along the nationalist route since 1998.

However, large crowds gathered along the road to physically obstruct the parade. Prominent political figures, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, joined the demonstration. Citing public safety concerns, law enforcement stopped the procession shortly after it departed Drumcree Church.

Orange Order representatives entered negotiations with police officers as stand-offs persisted near the historic flashpoint.
