Police halted a controversial Orange Order parade in Portadown after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road following a Belfast High Court ruling.

Tensions persist in Portadown following the halting of a contentious Orange Order march by police on Sunday morning. Demonstrators blocked the route along Garvaghy Road after the Belfast High Court upheld a Parades Commission ruling allowing 35 Orangemen to process silently past the nationalist area for the first time since the late 1990s.

Counter-protesters, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill, assembled early on Garvaghy Road to prevent the parade from proceeding. Citing safety concerns as crowds grew, law enforcement intervened near Drumcree Church to prevent the marchers from advancing further down the road.

Discussions between parade organizers, community representatives, and police continued as crowds remained at the site. The Drumcree route was historically a major flashpoint during the Troubles prior to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
