Tensions persist in Portadown after thousands of counter-protesters blocked a permitted Orange Order parade on Garvaghy Road, forcing police to halt the march.

Tensions persist in Portadown following the blockage of a contentious Orange Order parade along Garvaghy Road on Sunday. A late-night High Court decision had cleared 35 members of the Protestant organization to conduct a brief, silent march, marking the first permitted procession along the nationalist route in nearly three decades.

However, thousands of counter-protesters assembled to physically obstruct the route. Citing escalating safety concerns, police prevented the marchers from advancing past Drumcree Church. High-profile figures, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, joined local residents at the site. Organizers and police remain in discussions while both demonstration groups maintain a presence at the historic flashpoint.
