Tensions remain high in Portadown after thousands of counter-protesters blocked a contentious Orange Order parade authorized by an overnight court decision.

Tensions persist in Portadown following the disruption of a contentious Orange Order parade along Garvaghy Road on Sunday. A late-night High Court decision had temporarily overturned a multi-decade restriction, granting permission for 35 members of the Protestant organization to complete a limited silent march through the predominantly nationalist area.

However, thousands of counter-protesters, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered on the route to prevent the procession from taking place. Police officers intervened to halt the advance near Drumcree Church over safety concerns, prompting negotiations between Orange Order representatives, community leaders, and law enforcement. The historic route served as a prominent flashpoint during the Troubles prior to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
