A contentious Orange Order march in Portadown was halted by police after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road despite a High Court ruling permitting the parade.

Protests on Portadown's Garvaghy Road have halted a contentious Orange Order parade, following a late-night Belfast High Court ruling that permitted 35 members to conduct a silent march. The decision marked the first allowed procession along the predominantly nationalist route since 1998.

Thousands of counter-protesters, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered to physically obstruct the route. Citing escalating safety concerns, police prevented the marchers from advancing beyond Drumcree Church. Organizers and law enforcement engaged in talks while both demonstration groups maintained a presence at the historic flashpoint, leaving the parade delayed amid lingering uncertainty.
