Thousands of counter-protesters blocked a restricted Orange Order march in Portadown on Sunday, forcing police to halt the contentious parade.

Tensions flared in Portadown, Northern Ireland, on Sunday as thousands of counter-protesters blocked an Orange Order procession from passing through a predominantly nationalist area.

An early-morning High Court ruling had upheld a decision allowing 35 Orangemen to conduct a restricted silent march along Garvaghy Road between 8:00 am and 9:30 am. The route had been barred to the Protestant organisation since 1998 due to past violence during the Troubles.

However, police halted the marchers near Drumcree Church as a massive crowd gathered on Garvaghy Road. Counter-protesters, joined by Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, refused to clear the route, leaving the parade suspended as the legal timeframe expired.
