A contentious Orange Order march in Portadown remains halted after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road despite a High Court ruling.

A standoff in Portadown, Northern Ireland, continued on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road, preventing a contentious Orange Order parade from proceeding along its approved route.

The march, permitted through a late-night High Court decision upholding a Parades Commission ruling, was scheduled to pass through the predominantly nationalist area between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM for the first time since 1998. However, the 35 parade participants remained at Drumcree Church while organizers held discussions regarding the blockade.

Political divisions have intensified following the stalemate. Unionist leaders insisted that judicial rulings and marching rights must be respected, whereas nationalist representatives characterized the parade as sectarian harassment. Local authorities continue efforts to resolve the impasse as political figures express concern over rising tensions.
