A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown remains halted after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road past the march's permitted timeframe.

A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown remained halted on Sunday as thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road, preventing the procession within its legal timeframe.

Despite an early-morning High Court ruling permitting 35 Orangemen to conduct a restricted silent march between 8:00 am and 9:30 am, police stopped participants near Drumcree Church over public safety concerns. Protesters, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, filled the nationalist area to oppose the parade, which had been barred from the route since the late 1990s.

Discussions between authorities and community representatives failed to clear the impasse before the designated time expired, leaving the march suspended amid heightened local tensions.
