A contentious Orange Order march in Portadown was blocked by thousands of counter-protesters after police halted participants near Drumcree Church to prevent clashes.

Tensions persisted in Portadown, Northern Ireland, after counter-protesters blocked a contentious Orange Order parade from passing through Garvaghy Road on Sunday.

The High Court in Belfast had earlier permitted 35 members of the Protestant organization to conduct a silent march along the route, marking the first sanctioned procession there since the late 1990s. However, thousands of demonstrators gathered along the predominantly nationalist road to prevent the event.

Police officers stopped the marchers near Drumcree Church to avoid potential clashes, causing the procession's permitted timeframe to lapse. Law enforcement maintained a strong presence in the area as both demonstrators and parade participants remained nearby.
