A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown was prevented from advancing down Garvaghy Road by thousands of counter-protesters on Sunday.

Stand-offs persisted in Portadown on Sunday as thousands of counter-protesters blocked a contentious Orange Order parade from passing through Garvaghy Road. An early-morning High Court ruling had upheld a Parades Commission decision allowing 35 marchers to complete a silent procession along the predominantly nationalist route for the first time in nearly three decades.

However, the procession failed to depart Drumcree Church after demonstrators, including First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered on the road. Police halted the parade to avoid further unrest, leaving marchers past their court-mandated deadline. Law enforcement and community representatives subsequently entered discussions to manage the ongoing impasse at the historic Troubles flashpoint.
