A controversial Orange Order parade through the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road area of Portadown, Northern Ireland, was halted by thousands of counter-protesters on Sunday. The High Court had upheld a Parades Commission ruling permitting a restricted, silent march of 35 participants from Drumcree Church, marking the first allowed procession along the route since the late 1990s.
However, demonstrators blocked Garvaghy Road, preventing the marchers from departing within the court-mandated timeframe. Police subsequently intervened to stop the procession from advancing as tensions escalated, with high-profile figures including First Minister Michelle O'Neill joining the protest. Discussions and a standoff followed between organizers, authorities, and community representatives.
