Former German intelligence chief August Hanning and his former aide have been detained under suspicion of treason and spying for an undisclosed foreign power.

German federal prosecutors have detained August Hanning, the former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), alongside his former office manager, Manfred D., on charges of espionage and treason.

Hanning, who directed the agency between 1998 and 2005, is accused of illegally obtaining classified documents supplied by Manfred D. after leaving public service. Investigators suspect Hanning used the state secrets to prepare strategic analyses for an undisclosed foreign intelligence service. According to reporting by FAZ, the foreign entity involved is not affiliated with Russia.

The 80-year-old former spymaster faces charges including treasonous espionage and investigating state secrets. Both suspects remain in custody as the federal investigation continues.
