Former German intelligence chief August Hanning has been placed in pre-trial detention following his arrest on charges including attempted treason and foreign espionage.

An investigating judge at Germany's Federal Court of Justice has placed former Federal Intelligence Service (BND) president August Hanning in pre-trial detention following his arrest on espionage charges.

Federal prosecutors allege the 80-year-old compiled intelligence reports for a foreign service using classified information provided by his former office manager, Manfred D. The charges against Hanning include attempted treason, secret agent activity, and spying on state secrets. Reports indicate that the foreign intelligence agency involved is not believed to be Russian. Investigators claim the unauthorized access to sensitive documents continued for years after Hanning retired, allowing him to commercialize classified data through private consulting work.
