An investigating judge in Germany has ordered former BND chief August Hanning held in custody following his arrest on treason and espionage charges.

Former German foreign intelligence (BND) president August Hanning remains in custody following his arrest by federal authorities on charges of espionage and treason. An investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice formally remanded the 80-year-old in prison on 7 October, a day after his initial detention.

Hanning, who directed the BND from 1998 to 2005 before transitioning to private consulting, is accused alongside his former office manager, Manfred D. Prosecutors allege Manfred D. systematically leaked classified documents to Hanning after his departure from public service. The former spymaster allegedly utilized the material to draft assessments for an undisclosed foreign intelligence agency.
