Slovakia's ruling coalition aligns with far-right Republika amid cabinet instability
Slovakia's ruling coalition has partnered with far-right movement Republika for regional elections while navigating cabinet instability following minister Tomáš Taraba's removal.
Slovakia’s ruling coalition is navigating internal political friction following the parliamentary removal of Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba, a move initiated by Slovak National Party leader Andrej Danko and backed by opposition lawmakers. Analysts suggest Prime Minister Robert Fico could leverage the crisis to consolidate power, while voters in Fico’s hometown of Topoľčany continue to attribute government instability to coalition partners or the opposition rather than the prime minister.
Simultaneously, the governing parties—Smer, Hlas, and the Slovak National Party—have formed an electoral alliance with the far-right Republika movement to back Peter Hambálek for Trnava regional governor. The move marks the first formal pact between the coalition and Republika, which currently holds third place in national preference polls. Meanwhile, Republika’s youth branch faces criticism over a registration form mocking gender options.
