Former German intelligence chief August Hanning and his former office manager Manfred D. have been remanded in custody on charges of treason and espionage.

German federal prosecutors have detained August Hanning, former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), along with his former office manager Manfred D., on suspicion of espionage and treason. An investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice remanded the 80-year-old in custody following his detention on 6 October.

Investigators allege that Manfred D. systematically provided classified state secrets to Hanning after Hanning left public service. Hanning, who directed the BND from 1998 to 2005 before becoming a private consultant, allegedly used the classified information to compile intelligence assessments for an undisclosed foreign service. The Federal Prosecutor's Office charged both individuals with treasonous espionage, spying for a foreign power, and investigating state secrets.
