Former BND chief August Hanning and an associate face espionage and treason charges over alleged intelligence leaks to an undisclosed foreign agency.

German authorities have arrested August Hanning, former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), alongside his former office manager Manfred D. on charges including treasonous espionage and investigating state secrets.

Federal prosecutors allege that Manfred D. supplied classified material to the 80-year-old former spymaster following his departure from public service. Hanning, who led the BND between 1998 and 2005 before transitioning to private consulting, reportedly used the information to compile strategic assessments for an undisclosed foreign intelligence service. According to reporting, the foreign power involved is not Russia.

Both suspects remain in custody as the federal investigation continues into the alleged breach of state security.
