A restricted Orange Order parade in Portadown faced a standoff after counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road, delaying the first permitted march along the route in nearly 30 years.

A restricted Orange Order parade in Portadown faced a prolonged standoff on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked the nationalist Garvaghy Road, preventing marchers from proceeding.

The High Court in Belfast had upheld a Parades Commission ruling allowing 35 members to conduct a silent procession from Drumcree Church. The decision marked the first time since the late 1990s that the Protestant organization was permitted to walk along the historic Troubles-era flashpoint.

Police halted the marchers near the church to prevent clashes as crowds, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered along the intended route. The delay caused the procession to miss its court-mandated deadline, prompting discussions between Orange Order representatives and authorities to resolve the impasse.
