Orange Order march in Portadown halted by counter-protesters

Tensions remain elevated in Portadown, Northern Ireland, after police prevented a small group of Orange Order members from marching along the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road on Sunday. The procession of 35 marchers, granted permission following a late-night High Court ruling that upheld a decision by the Parades Commission, was halted near Drumcree Church to avoid clashes with thousands of counter-protesters occupying the route.

The event marked the first time since the late 1990s that authorities had authorized the Protestant organization to access the historical flashpoint route. However, due to the blockade and safety concerns, the marchers failed to complete the procession within the court-designated time window. Representatives from the Orange Order subsequently engaged in discussions with law enforcement as both sides maintained a presence in the area.
