A restricted Orange Order parade in Portadown was halted by police after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road.

A contentious Orange Order parade through Portadown was halted after thousands of counter-protesters gathered along Garvaghy Road on Sunday. An overnight High Court ruling had initially permitted 35 members to conduct a restricted silent march along the predominantly nationalist route for the first time in nearly three decades.

Police stopped the marchers near Drumcree Church to prevent disorder as crowds gathered, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill. Community representatives and authorities engaged in discussions to de-escalate the situation, but the parade failed to proceed within its permitted timeframe. Tensions remain high in the area as both groups maintain their presence.
