A contentious Orange Order march in Portadown was halted on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked the planned route along Garvaghy Road.

Tensions remain elevated in Portadown, Northern Ireland, after thousands of counter-protesters prevented a contentious Orange Order parade from passing through Garvaghy Road on Sunday. The High Court had upheld a Parades Commission decision permitting 35 members of the Protestant order to conduct a restricted, silent march along the predominantly nationalist route for the first time since 1998.

However, the procession was unable to depart from Drumcree Church after demonstrators, including First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered along the road. Police halted the march to maintain order and prevent potential violence, causing the parade to miss its court-mandated timeframe. Discussions involving law enforcement, community representatives, and organizers are ongoing as both groups remain in the area.
