Hungary reclaimed 2.27 billion forints from a toll system deal as authorities expand an audit into historical procurement contracts.

Hungarian Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy announced that a private equity fund associated with businessman Lőrinc Mészáros returned 2.27 billion forints to the state treasury.

The reimbursement follows an official review of a 64.5 billion forint transaction executed during former minister János Lázár’s tenure, which involved the state acquisition of three electronic toll system operators. Following this financial recovery, authorities expanded their investigation to examine historic procurement deals connected to IT entrepreneur Gábor Emőri. Emőri played a central role in developing and managing Hungary's national toll infrastructure over a 12-year period. Government officials are evaluating whether additional public funds from past toll management contracts can be reclaimed.
