Indian police detain opposition leaders and restrict transport amid New Delhi electoral roll protests
Indian authorities locked down New Delhi and detained political leaders amid mass protests against the removal of 130 million voters from electoral rolls.
Indian authorities imposed a severe security lockdown across New Delhi to suppress mass demonstrations sparked by the removal of approximately 130 million voters from electoral registries. Police detained Cockroach Janata Party leader Abhijeet Dipke alongside numerous other opposition figures and activists upon their arrival in the capital. Transport networks were severely disrupted, with officials canceling dozens of long-distance and local train services, closing metro stations, and cutting mobile internet access in target areas. Media estimates regarding the total number of detainees varied widely, with figures ranging from over 1,000 to tens of thousands held in temporary facilities such as sports arenas. Opposition leaders and civil rights groups contend that the electoral updates systematically target minority voters, particularly Muslims, while government officials maintain the process is a routine administrative procedure.
