Slovakia's ruling coalition aligns with far right amid internal cabinet friction
Slovakia's governing coalition has formed a regional pact with the far-right Republika movement following the dismissal of Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba.
Slovakia's governing coalition faces internal friction following the parliamentary removal of Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba, initiated by Slovak National Party leader Andrej Danko and supported by opposition lawmakers. Despite ongoing cabinet turmoil, supporters of Prime Minister Robert Fico in his hometown of Topoľčany maintain confidence in his leadership, placing responsibility for governance troubles on coalition partners or the opposition.
Simultaneously, coalition members Smer, Hlas, and the Slovak National Party have established a formal regional electoral alliance with the far-right Republika movement to back candidate Peter Hambálek for Trnava regional governor. The pact marks a notable shift as Republika climbs in national preference polls, despite recent scrutiny over derogatory language in its youth wing's registration materials.
