Former German intelligence chief August Hanning and a former associate have been arrested on suspicion of espionage, treason, and illegally acquiring state secrets.

German federal prosecutors have arrested August Hanning, the former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), alongside his former office manager, identified as Manfred D. The 80-year-old, who led Germany's foreign intelligence agency from 1998 to 2005, faces allegations of treason, spying for a foreign power, and illegally acquiring state secrets.

According to investigators, the associate allegedly provided Hanning with classified intelligence documents for years after Hanning entered private consultancy. Hanning is suspected of using the materials to compile analyses for an undisclosed foreign intelligence service. Reporting indicates that the foreign service in question is not associated with Russia.
