Ex-BND chief August Hanning arrested in Germany over espionage allegations
Former German BND chief August Hanning and an associate have been arrested on suspicion of espionage and treason for allegedly handling classified state secrets.
German federal prosecutors have detained August Hanning, former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), alongside his former office manager. The 80-year-old, who led the agency from 1998 to 2005, faces allegations of treason, spying for a foreign power, and illegally obtaining state secrets.
Investigators suspect that the associate systematically provided Hanning with classified intelligence documents after Hanning transitioned into private consultancy work. Hanning reportedly used these materials to prepare analyses for an unnamed foreign intelligence agency. Reporting indicates the foreign entity involved is not believed to be Russian intelligence.
The arrests mark one of the most significant security investigations involving former high-ranking German intelligence officials in recent history.
