Austria has broken its national temperature record with readings of up to 41 °C at a weather station in Vienna, prompting red heat warnings across the east of the country.

Austria has set a new national temperature record as extreme weather conditions continue across the region. Measurements recorded at the Vienna-Stammersdorf weather station reached temperatures between 40.8 °C and 41 °C on Tuesday afternoon, eclipsing the country's previous record of 40.5 °C set in August 2013 in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.

Public broadcaster ORF and Dutch outlet NU reported a preliminary figure of 40.8 °C, noting that official verification by GeoSphere Austria is required. Meanwhile, Austrian newspapers Die Presse and Der Standard reported peak measurements hitting 41 °C at approximately 3:30 p.m. Authorities maintained red heat warnings across eastern parts of the country as temperatures climbed throughout the day.
