Austrian healthcare facilities and officials are tackling extreme indoor heat and bacterial risks linked to high summer temperatures.

Austrian healthcare authorities and facilities are responding to challenges posed by persistent summer heat, focusing on indoor temperatures and bacterial risks.

At Vienna's Klinik Ottakring, hospital management addressed public criticism after a 93-year-old patient was kept in a room reaching 39 degrees Celsius during a recent heatwave. Facility leadership conceded there were "difficult conditions" and announced immediate corrective interventions to improve climate control.

Concurrently, health experts are highlighting rising risks of waterborne and airborne pathogens. The Austrian Health Insurance Fund recommended that residents returning from summer holidays flush water lines with hot water, as stagnant warm water fosters Legionella bacteria. Experts also warned of potential contamination from evaporative cooling towers operating in extreme temperatures.
