Record temperatures across Austria have strained public transport and prompted proposals in Vienna to shift the school holiday calendar.

Austria has faced historic heat across multiple provinces, with temperatures reaching a record 41.2 degrees Celsius in Lower Austria following 41 degrees in Vienna and unprecedented nighttime highs in Burgenland. Officials noted that extensive drought and prolonged summer heatwaves are becoming a recurring reality nationwide.

The extreme weather has increased pressure on urban infrastructure and public services. In Vienna, transit tests recorded vehicle temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius despite functioning air conditioning. In response to classroom conditions during early summer spikes, Vienna's education councillor proposed shifting the school holiday schedule to resume classes in August, an initiative scheduled for inter-state review in September. The federal government has also announced heat protection protocols for schools amid calls from educators and parents for long-term climate adaptation.
