Austria has recorded unprecedented temperatures reaching 41.2 °C, straining public transport and prompting proposals to reschedule school summer holidays to avoid peak heat.

Austria is grappling with historic heat and prolonged drought after national temperatures reached a record 41.2 °C in Lower Austria, following consecutive days exceeding 40 °C. Officials described the prolonged high temperatures as an emerging long-term climate reality that poses significant challenges for infrastructure and public services.

In Vienna, tests revealed interior temperatures in public transit vehicles exceeding 30 °C despite air conditioning systems. The extreme weather has also intensified scrutiny over school conditions. In response to high classroom temperatures, Vienna Education Councillor Bettina Emmerling proposed shifting summer holidays earlier to resume classes in August, avoiding the hottest early-summer periods. The proposal is scheduled for discussion among regional education officials in September, while educator and parent groups continue to argue that federal heat mitigation plans remain insufficient.
