Historic temperatures exceeding 41 degrees Celsius in Austria have raised concerns over public transit cooling and prompted proposals to reschedule school holidays.

Austria has recorded its highest-ever temperatures, with readings reaching 41.2 degrees Celsius in Lower Austria following consecutive days exceeding 40 degrees in Vienna. Coupled with the country's warmest recorded night in Burgenland and an unprecedented nationwide dry period, officials have described severe summer heatwaves as a recurring reality under climate change.

The extreme weather is placing pressure on public infrastructure and urban systems. Onboard transit tests in Vienna recorded cabin temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius despite operating air conditioning. Meanwhile, growing demands from educators and families for structural heat protection in classrooms have prompted policy debates. In response, Vienna's education leadership has proposed shifting the summer holiday schedule to start earlier and resume classes in August to avoid peak early-summer heat, a plan slated for inter-state discussions in September.
