Severe drought and extreme heat in Austria are forcing municipalities to restrict water usage while healthcare facilities struggle to manage critical internal temperatures.

Ongoing extreme heat and prolonged drought in Austria are straining municipal water supplies and healthcare infrastructure. Despite the country's abundant natural reserves, several municipalities have been forced to implement mandatory water conservation measures, prohibit private pool filling, and utilize tanker trucks for drinking water delivery.

The high temperatures are also posing severe challenges within healthcare settings. Austria's Social Ministry and the Competence Centre for Climate and Health are evaluating heat exposure across 1,239 health and care facilities nationwide. In Vienna, management at Klinik Ottakring conceded to "difficult conditions" and promised corrective measures after a patient was found in a room reaching 39 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, health experts warned of additional public health hazards, including airborne bacterial risks linked to cooling towers operating during extreme heat periods.
