Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with heavy tariffs over proposals to make Canada the bloc's first associate member.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with severe tariffs and trade restrictions if Brussels pursues closer institutional integration with Canada.

Trump's warnings followed a proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to make Canada the bloc's first associate member. Trump dismissed the idea as "ridiculous" and warned that Washington could respond with economic measures depending on whether the move stems from "good faith" or bad intentions.

The diplomatic tension comes amid deteriorating relations between Washington and Ottawa, prompting Canadian leaders to explore deeper transatlantic alignment with European partners. Finnish President Alexander Stubb previously remarked on Canada's shifting focus toward Europe over the U.S.
