US President Donald Trump has threatened the EU with tariffs and trade suspensions if Brussels proceeds with plans to offer Canada associate membership status.

US President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with severe tariffs and trade suspensions following a proposal to grant Canada associate membership status. The warning came after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested creating a novel associate framework for Ottawa amid growing diplomatic friction between Washington and its northern neighbour.

Trump described the initiative as "ridiculous" and warned that Washington could view closer EU-Canada integration as a hostile act depending on Brussels' underlying intentions. The debate follows comments by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who questioned whether Ottawa belonged closer to Europe rather than the US. Trump reiterated that substantial trade countermeasures remain under consideration if the EU advances the economic and political partnership.
