US President Donald Trump threatened severe tariffs against the EU if Brussels grants Canada associate membership, describing the European Commission's proposal as "ridiculous."

US President Donald Trump has warned the European Union of potential punitive tariffs and trade restrictions should Brussels grant associate membership status to Canada.

The warning follows a proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to establish a novel associate role for Ottawa amid strained transatlantic relations between the US and Canada. Trump dismissed the initiative as "ridiculous" and stated that closer European-Canadian ties could be viewed as a hostile action warranting an economic response.

The discussion surrounding deeper integration gained traction after Finnish President Alexander Stubb publicly questioned whether Canada's geopolitical alignment is shifting toward Europe rather than North America. Washington maintained that trade measures remain on the table if Brussels pursues the arrangement with Ottawa.
