US forces disabled a tanker heading to Iran as EU naval authorities raised threat levels following Red Sea attacks and piracy off Somalia.

Regional maritime security around the Middle East and East Africa has deteriorated further following several naval incidents. United States forces disabled a tanker heading toward an Iranian port by firing on its engine room after the vessel repeatedly attempted to bypass a US blockade.

This follows an attack on the Saudi-flagged tanker NCC Masa in the Red Sea, which sustained light hull damage before continuing to its destination port. In response to Houthi attacks, the European Union's Aspides naval mission raised its threat level from medium to high for the Bab al-Mandab strait and the southern Red Sea.

Meanwhile, security in adjacent waters remains volatile as Somali pirates in Puntland hold a merchant vessel with eight German nationals on board. Consequently, Germany announced the redeployment of two naval ships from East Africa back to the eastern Mediterranean.
