Iran has threatened Ukraine over a fatal Caspian Sea ship attack as maritime traffic faces severe disruptions across the Middle East and Gulf of Aden.

Tehran has threatened retaliation against Kyiv after a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian cargo ship in the Caspian Sea left one person dead. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei labeled the strike "absolutely illegal and unjustified" and warned that the action would not go unanswered.

The escalation comes as maritime security degrades across Middle Eastern shipping lanes. Data from Kpler indicates commercial vessel traffic through the Bab al-Mandab strait fell sharply following Houthi strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure. In the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian media reported an oil tanker exploded after hitting a sea mine, while Iranian forces intercepted several merchant ships. Meanwhile, a Saudi tanker suffered minor hull damage in the Red Sea, and Somali pirates continue holding a hijacked vessel carrying eight German citizens in the Gulf of Aden.
