Slovenian football figures Čeh and Mlakar reflect on careers and eternal derby

Former Slovenian national team captain Aleš Čeh and forward Jan Mlakar have shared insights into their professional journeys and the enduring rivalry between NK Maribor and Olimpija Ljubljana.

Čeh, who captained the national side during its memorable era under manager Srečko Katanec, discussed his shift into coaching following his playing career. He spent more than ten years as an assistant manager, including a seven-year stint in Asia alongside Katanec. Despite his historical affinity for Olimpija and Austrian club GAK, Čeh emphasized his continued respect for Maribor.

Separately, 27-year-old Ljubljana native Jan Mlakar has returned to Maribor for a third tenure. Commenting on Olimpija's recent internal difficulties, Mlakar observed that derby matches remain unpredictable, noting that struggling opponents can prove particularly dangerous regardless of current form.
