Search and rescue operations are intensifying along the Nepal-Tibet border following a catastrophic glacial collapse that triggered flash floods on Wednesday. The death toll in Nepal has reached between 165 and 175, while Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported three fatalities in Tibet.
More than 1,300 people remain missing across the region, including over 800 in Nepal and nearly 560 in Tibet. Among those unaccounted for are hundreds of foreign nationals from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Malaysia, and Ukraine.
The force of the mudslide was so powerful that seismologists initially misidentified the event as an earthquake. Torrents of mud and debris destroyed entire villages, power infrastructure, and key transit routes near the Gyirong border crossing. Rescue teams continue to navigate heavy sediment and disrupted terrain to search for survivors.
