Political science scholar Alpo Rusi details how Soviet intelligence targeted former Finnish Prime Minister Keijo Liinamaa and manipulated political succession in the late 1970s.

Political science scholar Alpo Rusi has outlined Soviet intelligence activities targeting Finnish political leadership during the transition period of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Writing in a commentary for Iltalehti, Rusi detailed how Moscow sought to manipulate domestic politics during the final years of President Urho Kekkonen's administration.

The analysis focuses on intimidation tactics aimed at Keijo Liinamaa, a former Finnish prime minister and national conciliator, shortly before his death in 1980. According to Rusi, KGB operations were designed to influence key succession decisions and secure leverage over senior government figures in Helsinki. Liinamaa had privately disclosed receiving threats during this high-stakes political environment. Rusi's findings underscore the extent of covert foreign intervention in Finnish state affairs as the Cold War political landscape shifted.
