A new analysis by Alpo Rusi reveals how Soviet intelligence targeted former Finnish Prime Minister Keijo Liinamaa to influence domestic politics during the late Cold War era.

Political scientist Alpo Rusi has detailed how Soviet intelligence targeted former Finnish prime minister and National Conciliator Keijo Liinamaa shortly before his death in December 1980. Writing for Iltalehti, Rusi examined threats directed at Liinamaa during a turbulent political period marked by the declining health of President Urho Kekkonen.

According to Rusi, the Soviet KGB actively conducted covert operations to manipulate Finnish domestic politics, labor relations, and economic policy. Moscow aimed to secure influence over Finland's leadership during upcoming executive transitions and maintain strategic leverage over Helsinki. The findings highlight the extent of Soviet espionage tactics designed to steer decision-making in Finland during the Cold War.
