Portugal's parliament has defeated a motion of censure introduced by the far-right Chega party after the main opposition Socialist Party abstained.

Portugal's parliament has concluded a debate on a motion of censure introduced by the far-right Chega party against the country's minority administration. The initiative failed to secure passage after the main opposition Socialist Party (PS) chose to abstain, ensuring the measure's defeat alongside opposition from the ruling coalition.

During the closing remarks of the three-hour session, Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro stated that voters would render a "political judgment" on Chega for putting forward a motion destined for failure. Leitão Amaro also criticized the Socialists' decision to abstain rather than vote directly against the motion, while reiterating that the cabinet will maintain its policy of negotiating parliamentary support on a case-by-case basis rather than seeking a fixed partner.
