Portuguese lawmakers have rejected a motion of censure against the government after the opposition Socialist Party abstained during the parliamentary debate.

Portugal's parliament has defeated a motion of censure against the governing Democratic Alliance, introduced by the right-wing Chega party. As anticipated, the initiative failed after the ruling coalition voted against it and the opposition Socialist Party abstained.

The initiative, titled "For the end of a Government without political authority," was brought following recent controversies involving the Ministry of Internal Administration. During the three-hour parliamentary debate, the executive criticized both Chega for bringing the vote and the Socialists for their positioning.

Presidency Minister António Leitão Amaro stated that voters would pass political judgment on Chega's decision. He reiterated that the minority administration will continue to negotiate legislative measures on a case-by-case basis without establishing a permanent coalition partner in parliament.
