Orange Order parade in Portadown blocked by counter-protesters
A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown was halted after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road despite a court ruling allowing a limited march.
A contentious Orange Order march in Portadown was prevented from proceeding on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road.
The Belfast High Court had earlier upheld a Parades Commission ruling allowing 35 members of the Protestant organization to complete a limited, silent procession past the predominantly nationalist district. It marked the first permitted march along the historic flashpoint since the late 1990s.
However, mass demonstrations, which included Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, forced police officers to halt the marchers near Drumcree Church to avert violent clashes. Tensions remain high in the area as demonstrators remain along the route while law enforcement attempts to manage the situation.
