EU approves record Russia sanctions package following compromise on oligarchs

EU foreign ministers approved a major new sanctions package against Russia after resolving a diplomatic dispute over delisting two Russian oligarchs.
Following diplomatic friction over individual blacklists, European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg approved the bloc's largest sanctions package to date against Russia's military apparatus. The decision coincided with growing geopolitical uncertainty regarding future assistance to Kyiv from Washington.
The adoption followed intense negotiations among member states to renew existing measures targeting roughly 3,000 individuals and entities. Countries including France, Slovakia, and Luxembourg had sought exemptions, prompting temporary extensions to avoid the automatic expiration of the blacklist under unanimity rules.
To reach consensus, diplomats agreed to remove steel magnate Alisher Usmanov and banker Mikhail Fridman from the restriction list, unlocking the broader measures. The finalized agreement preserves travel bans and asset freezes while expanding economic restrictions on Moscow.
