Icelanders have voted against resuming negotiations to join the European Union, after initial referendum counts showing a pro-EU lead were reversed.

Icelandic citizens voted on August 29 in a referendum on whether to reopen negotiations to join the European Union, 13 years after accession talks were originally suspended by Reykjavik.

The vote was described by the government as a critical opportunity to decide the nation's future direction regarding EU membership. Pre-vote polling reflected a deeply divided electorate, showing the opposition campaign slightly ahead.

Early preliminary counts broadcast by national television service RUV initially placed the pro-EU camp in the lead with 51.2% of the vote. However, as vote counting progressed across the country, updated figures reversed the initial projections. Final partial tallies showed the "No" campaign winning with 51.8% of the vote, totaling nearly 92,000 ballots. The outcome confirms that Iceland will not resume formal membership talks with the bloc at this time.
