Iceland voters have rejected a proposal to resume European Union accession negotiations after final counts reversed an early lead for the "Yes" campaign.

Final results from Iceland's referendum on whether to resume European Union accession talks show that voters rejected the proposal, with the "No" campaign securing 51.8% of the vote.

Early partial counts reported by public broadcaster RUV initially placed the "Yes" side ahead at 51.2%. However, as counting progressed, the outcome reversed, with nearly 92,000 voters rejecting the initiative.

The government in Reykjavik had framed the referendum as a "now or never" opportunity to restart formal membership negotiations, which were originally suspended in 2013. The final result confirms Iceland will maintain its current position outside the European Union for the foreseeable future.
