Icelandic voters have rejected a government-backed proposal to resume European Union accession negotiations after final referendum counts reversed an early pro-EU lead.

Icelandic voters have rejected a proposal to resume accession negotiations with the European Union, according to final referendum results reported by public broadcaster RUV.

Initial partial counts briefly placed the pro-EU side ahead with 51.2% of the vote. However, as counting progressed, the outcome reversed, with 51.8% of voters—representing nearly 92,000 citizens—selecting "No".

The government in Reykjavik had framed the vote as a "now or never" opportunity to restart formal membership talks, which were originally suspended in 2013. The definitive result confirms that Iceland will maintain its current position outside the European Union for the foreseeable future.
